Cotton wool can also vary enormously in quality. Careful selection of raw materials, gentle fibre processing and constant laboratory controls are essential to maintaining quality. Medical cotton wool should be particularly pure while cotton wool for hygiene and cosmetic purposes needs to be particularly absorbent. The more cotton it contains, the higher quality the cotton wool. For cosmetic purposes viscose wadding is sufficient. At HARTMANN, however, a fibre combination of cotton and viscose is preferred.
